The Holy Modal Rounders, a folk band comprised of eccentric
outsiders, have been playing their unique psychedelic folk for over
four decades. The amusing and moving documentary, "The Holy Modal
Rounders ... Bound to Lose" traces these musical outlaws from their
early notoriety to an unpredictable 40th anniversary concert in
Portland. This film, which will show at the Smith Rafael Film Center
in San Rafael Jan. 17 at 7 p.m., features appearances by playwright
(and former "Rounders" drummer) Sam Shepard, Dennis Hopper, John
Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Ed
Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg of The Fugs, Loudon Wainwright III, Ira
Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, critic Robert Christgau and Wavy Gravy. The
film was directed by Sam Wainwright Douglas, Paul Lovelace. (US 2007)
