Former Black Panther Party leader and activist Elaine Brown is
scheduled to speak about "New Age Racism" at noon Wednesday in the
Family Heritage House Museum at Manatee Community College, Bradenton,
5840 26th St. West.
Brown's appearance is sponsored by MCC's African-American Student
Union in honor of Black History Month and is free and open to the public.
Also a singer, songwriter and author, Brown is known for her
activism. She has established several nonprofit organizations,
including Field of Flowers in support of education for poor children
and Mothers Advocating Juvenile Justice. She is an advocate of
radical reform of the criminal justice system.
Brown wrote about her experience as the first and only chairwoman of
the Black Panther Party in a 1992 memoir, "A Taste of Power." Other
books include fiction, nonfiction, biography and children's stories.
Her albums of original songs include "Seize the Time!" and "Elaine
Brown." The first album, released in 1969, was re-released in January
2007 by Warner Brothers.
