In 1969, when she was 16, Gail Renard evaded heavy security at the
Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal and managed to sneak into Suite
1742, where John Lennon and Yoko Ono were staging their eight-day
bed-in for peace. Ms. Renard, now a prize-winning comedy writer and
comic, stayed for a week with the couple. On the final night of the
bed-in, Lennon led a recording of "Give Peace a Chance," sung by him
and 50 or so guests, including Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, Petula
Clark and Allen Ginsberg. He also gave Ms. Renard a few mementos,
including the lyrics, above, and told her that "one day they will be
worth something." On July 10 the lyrics and some rare photographs
will be offered in London by Christie's South Kensington at a sale of
rock and pop memorabilia. A Christie's announcement said the items
were expected to bring $400,000 to $600,000.
