The Mandeville Seafood Festival is set to start Wednesday July 3,
with a free concert by a local band, Leif Pedersen's 1944 Big Band,
sponsored by the City of Mandeville and Coastal Waste Management. The
party will continue through Fourth of July weekend coming to a close
Sunday, July 6. The true party starts Thursday with the Trey
Merrill-produced Summer of Love concert.
This Summer of Love concert is the 40th anniversary and will feature
hip music from the 60s and 70s. Vocalist Jo Jo Billingsley from
Lynyrd Skynyrd will be performing with The JJ Muggler band to set off
the night.
Later, Big Brother and the Holding Company will continue for musical
enjoyment without Janis Joplin, of course. It's A Beautiful Day
brings together original guitarist Billy Gregory, and David and Linda
LaFlamme for the first time in 30 years.
Quicksilver Messenger Service will also be on the ticket with
original members Gary Duncan and Gray Freiberg. They are best known
for (Have Another Hit Of) Fresh Air, Who Do You Love, and What About Me.
Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship will be performing some of their
early works such as Somebody to Love and White Rabbit.
There will also be entertainment for children which include carnival
rides and the Lagniappe tent. According to the festivals official
website, there will be Kid's Karaoke and a Mandeville Idol Contest.
This tent doubles as a comedy venue at night complete with food,
drinks, and air conditioning.
