Blame for Kent State shooting lies squarely with the National Guard

Regarding Madeline Huffnagle's Dec. 14 letter to the editor blaming
the 1970 Kent State University student deaths on the Students For a
Democratic Society.

I would like to remind Huffnagle that the U.S. Justice Department's
findings call the shootings "unnecessary, unwarranted and
inexcusable," and further that "of the 13 students shot, none, so far
as we know, were associated with either the disruption in Kent on
Friday night, May 1, 1970, or the burning of the ROTC building on
Saturday, May 2, 1970."

The logic that the National Guard killed innocent Americans because
of the events of May 1 through May 3 is absurd. By this thinking, we
can evade all responsibility for our actions merely by blaming those
with whom we disagree. This exemplifies the blindness to reason that
hatred induces.

In no way do I excuse the illegal actions of any person or group of
any political persuasion. However, to blame anyone other than those
who gave the command to open fire on innocent Americans and those who
followed such an order is patently un-American, because our country
was built upon the rule of law, not the rule of the mob.
