Playing hooky? Looking to escape the office doldrums? Yearning for
the sensation of warm sand under your feet and the echoes of waves in
your ear? If that be your desire, then your San Diego Gay Travel
Examiner introduce you to the last bastion of hippy culture in San
Diego, the beach community of Ocean Beach, home to all things organic
and alternative.
Ocean Bean Walkabout, Surf's up.
Spending the whole day, or just a sunny afternoon, there are some
places in Ocean Beach you just can't afford to miss like the infamous
Black, or Hodad's where people line up half a block away waiting to
get their burgers.
The Black Bead This little sister of the Infamous Black, is truly
any jeweler's wet dream come true. Displaying one of the most diverse
and vast collection of beads I have ever seen ranging from
intertwined jade beans to carved bone amulets, this is store is a
must visit. Every time I visit I come away with a new necklace, which
never falls to earn me a compliment or two.
The Black This infamous head shop first opened its doors in the
1960's helping to earn this beach community the reputation of being
the 'Haight-Ashbury of San Diego'. As the go-to place in San Diego
for all things smoke-related, be it any manner of glass pipes to
Arabian style hookahs designed by local artists. The Black also
offers a little something for everyone as I can testify to having
found my last green and gold Tibetan Buddha there. As they have a
strict policy in place against selling smoke-related items to
underage minors, I highly suggest not even attempting it as it will
get you kicked out.
Hodad's This burger joint is by far the best in my opinion, but
don't take my word alone for it. You can drive by on any given day
and see a line half a block long full of people waiting to get their
divine Hodad's burger. Try their double-decker cheeseburger, tis a
whole meal unto itself, and equally delicious.
The Sunshine Factory Decided to stay and watch the sun set over the
glorious Pacific? One of the best spots in town to do so, is from the
2nd story of The Sunshine Factory. This bar is always a hot spot of
social interaction, and lends itself nicely to a festive atmosphere
for all to enjoy. Try the house special of an Irish Car Bomb, just
make sure someone else is driving!
Wednesdays see Ocean Beach play host to their organic Farmers Market
and Street Faire.
