NYACK It has been 28 years since members of the Weatherman
Underground and the Black Liberation Army teamed up to commit an
armed robbery of a Brink's armored car in the upper parking lot of
the Nanuet Mall and in the process kill two police officers and a
Brink's guard.
At a memorial ceremony Tuesday, Clarkstown Police Officer John
Hanchar, the nephew of Sgt. Edward O'Grady, Jr., one of the murdered
officers, spoke of the unity and kindness of the community after the tragedy.
"Often as police, we feel that it's us against them. It's especially
true today when we often come under fire and people can anonymously
post things. It's easy to feel that it's us against the world," he
told the 200 plus people in attendance. "But, today I am here to tell
you that simply isn't true. Nothing can be further from the truth.
The people of this county have never been anything but supportive to
us and without them, we could not have come along as well as we have."
In the process of the robbery, Brink's guard Peter Page was mowed
down by automatic weapon fire and his partner was wounded.
The suspects then left the scene with a considerable amount of money
leaving in an unknown direction in several vehicles. A description
was broadcast and a concerned citizen reported that the suspects were
changing vehicles behind what is now Office Depot on Route 59 in
Nanuet and one of the vehicles was a U-Haul truck.
A roadblock was set up by Nyack Police at the entrance to the Thruway
off Mountainview Avenue. While the police were questioning the driver
of the U-Haul truck they had stopped, several suspects leaped from
the back of the truck and fatally wounded Nyack Police Sergeant
Edward O'Grady and Police Officer Waverly Brown.
Every year for the last 28 years, several hundred family and fellow
police officers gather at a memorial in Nyack to honor the three
men's memories.
