LA Nuggets Film Fest

Far Out!
LA Nuggets Film Fest At The Egyptian on Sunday

For fans of a particular kind of sixties music, the Nuggets series
can seem like a longtime friend, one with a really good record
collection. The guy knows his stuff. He combs through the bins of
7-inch ephemera and peeks inside every rockin' garage in America so
you don't have to, and puts together reliably excellent mixtapes
according to whatever theme was picked that day. Rhino's recent
release of the four-disc Where The Action Is! Los Angeles Nuggets
1965-1968 continues that tradition, and provides a reason to
celebrate at the Egyptian all day tomorrow.

Festivities begin at the crack of noon with a Monkees matinee -- four
episodes of the loopy TV series that can't found on DVD. The 4:00pm
"afternoon session" is a screening of a "'60s L.A. Promotional Film
Potpourri", a collection of rarely seen promotional films from Sonny
and Cher, Boyce and Hart, the Turtles and the Mamas and Papas.
Acclaimed SoCal music historian Domenic Priore (Riot On The Sunset
Strip: Rock 'n' Roll's Last Stand in Hollywood), will host an opening
slide presentation. The super-groovy evening concludes at 7:30pm with
a double feature of "Riot on Sunset Strip"" (1967) and "The Pad, And
How To Use It." (1966), two essential touchstones for those who wish
to learn how to speak hip.

Scene vets Merrell Frankhauser, Bobby Hart (Boyce & Hart), Billy
Hinsche (Dino, Desi & Billy), Van Dyke Parks, and The Electric
Prunes' Mark Tulin are signing stuff in the courtyard between 2 and 4
pm, along with authors Priore and Andrew Sandoval (The Monkees: The
Day-By-Day Story Of The '60s TV Pop Sensation) and Monkees
screenwriter David Evans. It's a perfect chance to get those vintage
7-inches personalized. If you don't happen to own any, you could do
worse than to get yourself a copy of Where The Action Is, which
they'll be signing too.

The LA Nuggets Extravaganza takes place on Sunday, November 1 at the
Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard. $10 admission for each
film session, free to attend the signing in the courtyard.
