Cartoonist R. Crumb has come a long way from his days as a star of
the underground comics movement of the 1960s and its taboo-busting
focus on sex, drugs and rock and roll. R. Crumb's, The Book of
Genesis Illustrated (W.W. Norton), a careful and scholarly comics
adaptation of the first book of the bible, has been number one on the
New York Times weekly graphic books bestseller list for 16 weeks and
on PW's monthly comics bestseller list every month since its publication.
Crumb's hardcover graphic adaptation has sold more than 120,000
copies since its publication in October and W.W. Norton executive
editor Robert Weil, who edited the book, says "there's a lot going on
with the book." Weil says foreign sales for the Book of Genesis
Illustrated have been "spectacular" and foreign rights to the book
have been sold in about 16 countries including recent sales to Japan,
Poland, Russia and Turkey.
Weil also said Crumb and his wife, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, who live in
the south of France, will be in New York City beginning March 4 for
the opening of an exhibition of the original artwork from The Book of
Genesis Illustrated that will open at the Zwirner Galley in Manhattan.
Norton has also acquired world rights to the Sweeter Side of Crumb, a
new edition of a previously published collection of drawings by Crumb
that will include a revised introduction. The book belies Crumb's
reputation as a master of the grotesque, biting satire and darkly
neurotic impulses. The book collects illustrations and drawings from
across Crumb's career that show off a lesser-known talent for
capturing sweet, tender and often delightfully cheerful moments. The
deal was negotiated by Judy Hansen, Crumb's North American literary
agent, in conjunction with Lora Fountain, Crumb's primary agent in Paris.
