GALVESTON For singer Myrna Sanders, what began as a brief
experiment a few years ago has turned into a passion.
Sanders is the heart and soul of Kozmic Pearl, the Ultimate Janis
Joplin Tribute, which returns to perform during Mardi Gras Galveston
today at the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe.
Sanders, who had been creating her own music since the 1980s, was
asked at the last minute to see if she could put together a few
Joplin songs for a show in Houston in 2006. The rest, as they say, is history.
Sanders and her backing band have since performed steadily at clubs
and festivals around Texas, bringing new congregations closer to the
blues-rock gospel spelled out by Joplin.
Kozmic Pearl has since headlined at the annual Gulf Coast Music
Awards in Joplin's hometown of Port Arthur, performed at the House of
Blues and has shared the stage at classic rock concerts with the
likes of America and Christopher Cross.
Sanders said her band, Kozmic Pearl, has worked hard to faithfully
re-create the psychedelic blues sound from the late 1960s that set
"I've always had the greatest respect for Janis Joplin's decision to
follow her own path," Sanders said. "I had no idea how much her music
inspired me throughout my career until I pulled together this musical
Kozmic Pearl performs all of Joplin's hits such as "Piece of My
Heart," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Summertime," "Move Over" and "Ball and
Chain," the song that put Joplin on the musical map when she blew
away the audience at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.
Sanders knows the band's music appeals to older fans who might have
seen Joplin perform during her brief heyday. But she's encouraged to
see younger fans really get into the music at Kozmic Pearl concerts.
"I'm hoping we can reach not only her longtime fans but turn on a new
generation to her groundbreaking contribution to rock," Sanders said.
