A new biopic about celebrated civil rights leader César Chávez is in
the works.

March 31 is César Chávez Day and this year, news that a film about
the civil rights leader is moving forward will brighten the celebrations.

Keir Pearson, nominated for a 2005 Academy Award for co-writing Hotel
Rwanda, will write the screenplay for the movie. He will also
co-produce with Larry Meli for the Mexican production company Canana
Films, which is partially run by Y tu mamá también actors Gael García
Bernal(The Motorcycle Diaries and Babel), and Diego Luna (Dirty
Dancing: Havana Nights and Milk).

Pearson and Meli have optioned life rights, which were negotiated by
Chávez's son Paul on behalf of the César Chávez Foundation

Born in Arizona, César Chávez was a Mexican-American activist in
support of workers' rights who, with fellow leader Dolores Huerta,
co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, later known as the
United Farm Workers. He protested mistreatment of migrant and field
workers as well as unfair farming practices, among other things. He
died in 1993 at the age of 66.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of
Freedom, and in 2006, he was inducted into the California Hall of
Fame by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver.

No word yet about who will play Chávez or when the film will be released.
