An exhibition that might induce flashbacks for sixties-rock music
fans opened at The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles Monday.
The "Strange Kozmic Experience: The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi
Hendrix" displays one-of-a-kind artifacts from The Doors, Joplin, and Hendrix.
Housed on the museum's second floor in downtown L.A., the exhibit
explores the legacies and continual impact of these artists who
impacted a generation.
Bob Santelli, executive director of Grammy Museum, said, "The Doors,
Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. And together, these three artists
really did a whole lot in the late sixties to create one of the most
fertile, one of the most creative periods in all of rock history. The
interesting thing about them and why the exhibit is taking place now
is because we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the death of
Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Forty years ago, both at the age of
twenty seven they passed. In 1971, Jim Morrison does too. You take
these three artists out of the picture, rock and roll and rock in
particular on the west coast was vastly, well stifled. It was
stifled. It took a brand new direction in the 1970's perhaps in
wouldn't have taken had these three artists lived."
Some of the items on display include The Doors' Lifetime Achievement
Grammy from 2007, a tambourine belonging to Jim Morrison that was a
gift from his girlfriend Pamela Courson, some of Hendrix's wardrobe,
plus personal letters of Joplin's and her custom-painted 1965 Porsche
356c Cabriolet.
The exhibition is open through January 31st, 2011.
