"You are not supposed to have this much fun at a Grange event." -
Lisa Blum, 2009 Grangestock attendee.
In the summer of 1969, five hundred thousand young people converged
on a dairy farm in rural New York for "three days of peace and
music". "Woodstock" defined a generation.
In celebration of the 41st anniversary, Grangestock will be presented
July 17, an outdoor festival of fun, food & music at the Orangevale
Grange's beautiful natural amphitheatre.
Grangestock will begin at 11:00am and feature ten "far out" bands and
entertainers from across the state, providing music and laughs for a
day-long celebration of Woodstock and an era that brought us hippies,
hot pants & Hubert Humphrey. The festivities will last until
"whenever, man", ending by 9:00pm. A $10.00 donation per adult will
be accepted at the event.
A list of musical acts scheduled to play throughout the day includes:
The Grangeful Dead, M3 Squared, William Mylar, High Strung, The
Radios, Leftovers, O Street, and Rio Linda Swap Thing.
Grangestock's motto is "Let Your Freak Flag Fly!" Remembering the
flower children of the sixties, attendees are encouraged to wear
tie-dye shirts, let down their hair and start-up the old Volkswagen
bus. Prizes will be awarded for the best-dressed hippie and best 60's
and 70's celebrity impersonators. Last year Joe Cocker and Janis
Joplin imitators had the crowd in stitches.
Grangestock is "groovy" for families, too. Planned activities include
Zodiac Readings, Hippies on parade, and "cool" vendors. "Alice's
Restaurant" will feature delicious healthy snacks as well as more
traditional hot dogs and cold drinks.
It's all in fun and for a good cause. Donations paid at the event
will benefit Grange programs, including G.R.E.A.T. (Grange Relief
Emergency Action Team), a program providing emergency assistance to
victims of natural disasters. G.R.E.A.T. was started after five
Grange families lost their homes in the summer of 2008 in Northern
California wildfires.
Grangestock will take place July 17 beginning at 11:00am at the
Orangevale Grange's beautiful natural amphitheatre located at 5807
Walnut Avenue. A $10.00 donation per adult will be accepted at the event.
