He is known for giving the black power salute during the 1968 Olympics, and Tuesday he was in South Bend to share his inspirational message.

Famous Olympic athlete John Carlos spoke at a Soul Food Luncheon Tuesday morning.

In 1968, the human rights activist bowed his head, along with another bronze medalist, and raised their black-gloved fists.

The gesture captured the world's attention.

Carlos shared his story of how that moment still affects his life today.

John Carlos "For you it would be many years ago, for me it was like yesterday, because I come close to so many people in my life that specifically ask me about that particular day, so everyday I'm talking about it like it was yesterday."

Carlos is speaking at a number of events in South Bend, including a lecture about the cost of courage at the Civil Rights Heritage Center Wednesday night at 6.
